The Eduarda S. Mina Memorial Scholarship

is funded by the Erwin and Corie Mina family, and the Filipino American National Historical Society Delano Chapter.

Erwin is the youngest of the six children of Eduarda and Silvino Mina, one of the Filipino pioneer families in Delano, California. Erwin is a 1977 graduate of Delano High School.

Eduarda Mina passed away on April 23, 2020. She was a War-Bride from World War II. She arrived in Delano in 1954. Because of her humble beginnings, she never forgot others who followed in her path. She was an advocate for Filipino immigrants for over five decades. Eduarda helped many people get situated in housing, jobs, and education as they started a new life in America.

This year, three $500 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors in Delano, California to help finance their intentions for higher education.

Applicants from Delano High School, Robert F. Kennedy High School, and Cesar E. Chavez High School must be an upcoming graduate with plans to enroll in college, university, business, vocational, or trade school in the Fall, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, and submit a personal essay.

Eduarda’s message, shared with her family and others, rings true for today’s graduates –
Meet all hardships with love and education as the way to seek a better life.

Her story is part of the early Delano Filipino American experience.

FANHS National Museum

FANHS National was founded in 1982 in Seattle WA by the late Dr. Fred Cordova and his wife, Dr. Dorothy Cordova. FANHS has over 40 chapters located throughout the United States.

The Delano chapter was formed June 2015 and is the 33rd chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society.

The chapter is centered on the city where the historic grape strike of 1965 was begun by Filipino workers and labor leaders, although it serves other communities in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

FANHS's Mission

To promote understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States.

Membership

FANHS/Delano is open to anyone interested in its mission. Annual or lifetime dues for individuals or families permits access to information, events/activities, projects, and products to advance Filipino American history and culture.

As a chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society, we are a 501c3 nonprofit, and your membership fees are deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Ongoing Activities

Local History

Record oral histories from pioneer individuals/families, especially the events leading up to, during and after the Grape Strike (1965-70). Archive documents, photos, materials from earlier generations.

Historical Designation

Created a plaque acknowledging the Filipino Community Hall's role in the Delano Grape Strike. Raising funds for the permanent placement outside the famed building. In addition, applying to National Park Service for National Historical Landmark designation for the Hall.

Education

Establish programs in the community and schools year-round, especially for Filipino American History Month (October) and Larry Itliong Day (Oct. 25).

Current Activities

Mural Installed

At the behest of Larry Itliong's youngest child and Morningside School librarian Patty Itliong Serda, a mural depicting the labor leader's life accomplishments was placed on the library's exterior wall. Filipino muralist Eliseo Art Silva designed and installed the mural in October 2021.

The artist explains the symbolism and the methods he used in the mural.
