"Delano Manongs:
Forgotten Heroes of the UFW"

On Sept. 8, 1965, Filipino farm workers, led by labor leaders such as Larry Itliong, Pete Velasco, Andy Imutan and Fred Abad laid the grape crop on the soil and walked off their jobs to launch what became known as the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott. Eight days later, Cesar Chavez-led Mexican workers joined the Filipinos in the picket line and the farm labor movement drew national and international attention. But the huge shadow cast by the charismatic Chavez would eventually darken the memory of these Filipino farm workers -- many of them aging unmarried men brought in the 1930s and '40s to work in the cane fields, farms and canneries of the western United States. Following years of research, native daughter and documentarian Marisa Aroy reminds Americans of the manongs' role in her acclaimed film, "Delano Manongs: Forgotten Heroes of the UFW."
